To mark what would have been the Magneto retro shirt and by the same token and vaunted Indian filmmaker’s 100th birthday (he was born on May 2, 1921, and died at 70 in 1992), the Criterion Channel has curated a generous selection of his works, among them Pather Panchali (1955) and Aparajito (1956) of his important Apu Trilogy; 1958’s The Music Room (cited by Roger Ebert as having “one of the most evocative opening scenes ever filmed”); and the 1964 drama Charulata (centered on a devastating performance from Madhabi Mukherjee, who worked with Ray three times). As the Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa once opined, “Not to have seen the cinema of Satyajit Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon.”
